‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ Delivers a Welcome $56 Millon Haul; ‘The Watchers’ Stumbles in First Weekend
The domestic box office finally changed course after a slow start to the summer release season, as ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ won the weekend with a successful $56 million opening. This is the best R-rated opening in theaters since last year's 'Oppenheimer.' It’s also Will Smith’s sixth-highest domestic opening and the first notable major summer title that over-performed against tracking numbers.
The fourth film in Smith and Martin Lawrence's action franchise was projected to do well, but Hollywood had reasons to temper that optimism. For starters, this was Smith’s first major release after the infamous Oscars slap in 2022, and it wasn’t clear if the fallout would have a lasting impact on his box office marketability. And while the previous installment, ‘Bad Boys for Life,’ was the biggest hit of 2020 with $427 million worldwide, it was also the last hit of 2020 when the global pandemic brought the industry to a screeching halt.
The thriller ‘The Watchers,’ the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, opened in fourth place to just $7 million, a disappointing debut for a genre film supported by a bankable star in Dakota Fanning and a first-time director with built-in name recognition as the daughter of supernatural hit-maker M. Night Shyamalan.
Chris Pratt’s animated comedy ‘The Garfield Movie’ held in second place in its third week, earning $10 million for a $192 million worldwide total, while another family film—John Krasinski's animated/live-action film ‘IF’—also held its appeal with $8 million in its fourth weekend for a $160 million total worldwide.
It was another rough weekend for ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ as it dropped to sixth place behind ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.’ The 'Mad Max: Fury Road' prequel took in a $4.25 million, a 60% drop from last week, while 'Apes' continued to draw audiences with $5.4 million.
In the top 10 were also re-releases of two The Lord of the Rings movies, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ ($2.44 million) and ‘The Two Towers’ ($1.91 million), which played on 1,529 screens each, capitalizing on audience nostalgia.
Next weekend, all eyes turn to Disney and Pixar to deliver with the release of animated sequel ‘Inside Out 2.’ Hollywood could use another bright spot this summer, and there isn’t another big hit expected until July, with the release of ‘Despicable Me 4’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

When it comes to the Big Three who have dominated men’s tennis for the past two decades, I’ve always favored Roger Federer over rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Federer’s game had a multi-surface brilliance and beauty that rarely got obscured by anything extraneous — off-court drama, on-court excesses. You could marvel at the reliable wizardry of a Federer performance and just assume that, in his utterly wholesome boringness, he wouldn’t let you down as a person either.
And that’s the furthest thing from an insult. Roger Federer always presented as a completely decent person and a miraculous tennis player.
So when I call Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia’s Federer: Twelve Final Days, a new documentary premiering at Tribeca ahead of its Amazon airing, comfortably dull, that’s another way of saying that it’s probably precisely the documentary that Federer would have wanted made about himself.

Global advertising spending will grow 7.8 percent in 2024 to $989.8 billion and increase a further 6.8 percent in 2025 to $1.1 trillion, according to a new forecast from ad media giant GroupM. The updated estimates are up from a December projection for a 5.3 percent ad gain this year.
Thanks to the expected momentum, the industry will surpass the trillion dollar milestone in 2025, one year earlier than previously forecast, GroupM emphasized.
“The increases in the total revenue for these years are largely due to revised forecasts for China, which we now estimate will record $199.4 billion in 2024 versus the $148.2 we wrote in our last forecast,” the firm explained. “These gains are primarily within digital pure-play and out-of-home advertising. We have also revised estimates for the U.S., which we now expect to reach $365.9 billion in ad revenue, up 5.8 percent over 2023’s $345.9 billion, excluding the impact of political advertising in both years.”

King Charles has retained his patronage of the British Film Institute, the U.K. body for which he’s served as patron for more than 45 years.
The BFI revealed the news on Tuesday, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the opening of London’s BFI Imax, where King Charles — then Prince Charles — cut the ribbon on June 11, 1999.

‘A Desert’ Review: Joshua Erkman’s Debut Feature Is an Intriguing but Murky, Horror-Adjacent Mystery
It’s easy to get lost in the desert, a fate that befalls Joshua Erkman’s debut feature. While his protagonists eventually get dangerously close to some lurid, lethal goings-on, this self-described “neo-noir horror” leaves a vague and rudderless final impression despite its intriguing-enough buildup. “A Desert” aims for the enigmatic, supernaturally-tinged mystery of something like Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” but in the end lacks the tension and atmosphere to pull that tricky gambit off. Nonetheless, its arty sojourn through backroads-thriller terrain is likely to gain some supporters as a Tribeca Fest midnight section premiere.

It’s probably not the right time for a new version of “The West Wing,” but never say never, Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Television Group chairman and CEO Channing Dungey says the era of a 600-show universe wasn’t good for TV viewers.
“The truth of the matter is Peak TV wasn’t really great for the business when you have 600 shows being made,” Dungey told the Banff World Media Festival while giving a Summit Series keynote address. Her comments on Peak TV’s downslope came as the industry grapples with escalating content costs and an industry contraction.
“I don’t mean to make light of the fact that as those numbers (600 shows) come down, you do have fewer people as jobs are harder to come by,” Dungey argued. But she added TV viewers couldn’t make sense of Peak TV amid its bounty.

The future of Paramount Global remains uncertain, but the co-CEOs of the company will be just fine however things shake out.
On Monday, Paramount filed with the SEC some compensation details for its new co-chief executives, including the critical detail that all three are now participants in the “Paramount Global Executive Change in Control Severance Protection Plan.”
All three men also received a cash bonus under the company’s short-term incentive plan of $2,750,000, which will be prorated to their service as co-CEOs.
The change-in-control plan is designed to provide enhanced severance in the event of a sale or other change in control event. The plan includes a pro-rata portion of their target performance bonus, and a 2X multiple of their annual salary, as well as other benefits.

Kendrick Lamar surprised the class of 2024 at Compton College last week with a surprise commencement address in which he told the graduates that he believes the California city produces unmatched talent and praised their “courage to be independent thinkers.”

The results are in after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held elections for 17 seats on its 55-person board of governors, and the newly constituted board will include five rookies, one comeback kid and 11 continuing incumbents.
The five first-time governors will be Patricia Cardoso (directors branch), a 1996 Student Academy Award winner best known for helming 2002’s Real Women Have Curves, who will succeed Susanne Bier; Jennifer Fox (producers), an Oscar nominee for Michael Clayton and five-time producer of the Academy’s Governors Awards, who will succeed Jennifer Todd; K.K. Barrett (production design), an Oscar nominee for Her, who will succeed Tom Duffield; Andy Nelson (sound), a 24-time Oscar nominee who has taken home statuettes for Saving Private Ryan and Les Misérables, who will succeed Gary C. A big dragon head, a lot of flames, cosplayers and stars galore on the red carpet as House of the Dragon celebrated its season 2 U.K. premiere on Monday evening had attendees and the many onlookers ablaze with excitement despite repeated rain showers in the British capital earlier in the day. Of course, the Iron Throne was also there.

Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding have nabbed starring roles in Heart Eyes, a horror romantic comedy for Spyglass.
Josh Ruben will direct the genre pic from a screenplay by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy, with production set for New Zealand. The film, according to the producers, will kick off with the Heart Eyes Killer striking Seattle, and a pair of co-workers doing overtime on Valentine’s Day being mistaken for a couple by the elusive killer.
Now the couple must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Heart Eyes, blending horror and comedy, will follow on the success of Scream, Scream VI and Thanksgiving for Spyglass.
Landon, Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks will share producing credits, while Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone will serve as executive producers, with Murphy.

Will Arnett is expanding his relationship with Fox Entertainment. The actor and comedian, who hosts Fox’s “Lego Masters,” has sealed an overall producing deal for his Electric Avenue Prods. to produce fare for the network’s in-house production company.
As part of the pact, Electric Avenue will exclusively develop unscripted fare for Fox, while hold a first-look agreement for scripted series to be produced by Fox Entertainment Studios. What does it mean to be a Jew? Who gets to be a Jew? These are some of the most ancient questions in Jewish doctrine and also the underlying themes of Sandi DuBowski’s enthralling 100-minute documentary Sabbath Queen, which follows the evolution of Amichai Lau-Lavie, a drag queen and radically egalitarian performer in the New York Jewish community who chose to become a denominationally conservative rabbi later in life.
DuBowski, who helmed the groundbreaking queer Jewish nonfiction classic Trembling Before G-d (2001), about gay and lesbian Orthodox Jews reconciling their opposing identities, does not fashion a hagiography of Lau-Lavie’s seemingly admirable life. If anything, he challenges him with thorny, perhaps unanswerable, questions and includes filmed conversations with Lau-Lavie’s friends and family, who push back against what they perceive as his egotism.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will lead the cast of Netflix’s upcoming thriller series “Man on Fire.” He will also executive produce the project alongside Steven Caple Jr., who has been set as director of the first two episodes under showrunner Kyle Killen.
